A sweep uses a metal detector, ground-penetrating radar, or both, to look for a buried tank. Clues an inspector may spot: a capped fill pipe or vent near the foundation, an old oil line through the basement wall, or an oil furnace in the house's history.
Expect a few hundred dollars; radar costs more than a metal detector. Some home inspectors offer it as an add-on. If a tank turns up, you can ask the seller to remove or decommission it, with the permit and report, before closing.
- Put your inspection deadline in the request so pros can say if they can make it.
